’ voice faded away as the story he told took visual form in my mind. I was an onlooker as events unfolded before me. It all started by an open campfire on the tribal island. It was as though I was in the woods nearby, watching.

Huddled around the fire were seven older-looking tribesmen. One looked very similar to Susmo, but I could tell he was much taller, even though he was sitting down. The man next to him was slumped over, leaning on his shoulder. All eyes were on the slumped man, and there was a definite air of concern.

“I shall not lose my brother,” the Susmo look-alike said sadly. “He is too young to be taken.”

An older gentleman across the fire stared at them with empathy in his eyes. “There is nothing to be done, Salzen. You have tried all the healing practices passed down by your mentor. His condition continues to worsen. Soon, I fear his pain will grow so severe that he will wish for death.”

“Then I shall learn more and try again,” Salzen replied.

“I fear there is no more time,” the elder said gently.

The other men in the circle nodded their agreement while looking on, obviously hurting for their ill member, but for his brother as well.

The man to Salzen’s left put his hand on Salzen’s shoulder.

“You must not blame yourself,” he said. “If I was your brother, I would be proud to have such a skilled shaman come to my aid. His

death is simply inevitable.”

“I don’t think any of you understand,” Salzen said sadly. “Mylena is pregnant.”

The men’s faces changed from sad to worried. The elder sat up and leaned forward. “Are you positive?”

“Yes,” Salzen replied. “She confirmed it with the tribe mother this morning. Now, do you see why my brother cannot die yet?”

The men nodded their heads, and the worry deepened.

Suddenly, a quiet voice came floating in from somewhere in the darkness. “Perhaps you can keep him alive after all.”

The men’s heads all whipped around in the direction the voice came from. A young girl, no more than thirteen years old, stepped forward where I could see her in the firelight. She looked scared but determined as she waited for a reply. Salzen looked mad but took a deep breath and nodded in the girl’s direction. She took a few steps forward again and looked at the older man. He stared at her with a look I could only derive as being disappointed.

“You know better, Ansyn,” he warned. “You do not interrupt a meeting of the council. You do not interrupt the men of your tribe ever. You’ve always been a respectful daughter. Why have you ventured so far from your true nature to speak out of turn this night?”
